Missionary Challenge: 3 Nephi 12:2-16

“And again, more blessed are they who shall believe in your words because that ye shall testify that ye have seen me, and that ye know that I am. Yea, blessed are they who shall believe in your words, and come down into the depths of humility and be baptized, for they shall be visited with fire and with the Holy Ghost, and shall receive a remission of their sins.

Yea, blessed are the poor in spirit who come unto me, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

And again, blessed are all they that mourn, for they shall be comforted.

And blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.

And blessed are all they who do hunger and thirst after righteousness, for they shall be filled with the Holy Ghost.

And blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy.

And blessed are all the pure in heart, for they shall see God.

And blessed are all the peacemakers, for they shall be called the children of God.

And blessed are all they who are persecuted for my name’s sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

And blessed are ye when men shall revile you and persecute, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake;

For ye shall have great joy and be exceedingly glad, for great shall be your reward in heaven; for so persecuted they the prophets who were before you.

Verily, verily, I say unto you, I give unto you to be the salt of the earth; but if the salt shall lose its savor wherewith shall the earth be salted? The salt shall be thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out and to be trodden under foot of men.

Verily, verily, I say unto you, I give unto you to be the light of this people. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hid.

Behold, do men light a candle and put it under a bushel? Nay, but on a candlestick, and it giveth light to all that are in the house;

Therefore let your light so shine before this people, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father who is in heaven.” – 3 Nephi 12:2-16

Okay…this is a great scripture block. Christ gives the Nephites the Sermon on the Mount. Here are a few thoughts.

“The Blesseds.” I’ve made a little table here. Listed is the relationship between the quality and the reward. In the far right column I’ve also added a little personal note.
Blessed are…

Those who…(Quality) For they…(Reward) My own little note… 🙂
believe in the prophets will be visited with the Holy Ghost When we listen to the prophets, we are visited with the Holy Ghost. He testifies of their message – which is the Good News of Christ
are poor in Spirit who come unto Christ [Theirs is] the kingdom of Heaven I love the account given in the Book of Mormon – it explains that when we are poor in Spirit, and we come unto Christ, then we are blessed. We need to come unto Christ, and when we do, He offers us His kingdom!
mourn shall be comforted This is so comforting to know we will be comforted by the Savior. I know the Jesus Christ really loves each of us.
are meek shall inherit the earth I want, so badly, to be meek. I want to be graceful, humble, and able to maintain such poise even under pressure. I think of Mary – she was meek. I want to be that way. And, the meek inherit the earth. This seems to contradict what the world knows to be true – as meek people usually aren’t the super ambitious type – who will do anything to make money, etc. In fact, the truly meek will completely submit their wills to Heavenly Father. They do not set their hearts upon riches, yet they inherit the earth. There is so much more to explore here.
hunger and thirst after righteousness are filled with the Holy Ghost I know this to be true. When I read the scriptures I am filled with happiness, enlightenment, courage, hope, and, in short, the Holy Ghost.
are merciful shall obtain mercy So simple, and such a great blessing.
are pure in heart shall see God We must be purified in order to see God. That fact is actually a blessing because it would be painful to be unclean in the presence of a perfect, Glorious God.
are the peacemakers are called the children of God To be called a children of God – would be an honor
are those who are persecuted for Christ’s sake shall have joy with the Father in the Kingdom of Heaven This one kind of scares me – in that I don’t want to be persecuted, but it is nice to know that, despite the persecution, we will receive joy in Heaven. Persecution is not something to look forward to, but the sacrifice does not go unnoticed by the Lord

by the way, do you like the table? I’m amazed at what I’ve learned about css codes, etc since I’ve started blogging! 🙂

Additionally, I love how Christ implores us to let our lights shine. This directly relates to missionary work. I need to let my light shine. I need to show others that I’m happy by being happy. I also need to share the source of my happiness – the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
