FHE – Wisdom

Last night, Panda was in charge of Family Home Evening. She drew the topic of wisdom

In preparing this, she chose to concentrate on the parable of the wise and foolish man. She prepared an object lesson
Object Lesson
Materials:
pie pans
sand
large rock
play-doh
water source (we used the spray nozzle in our sink)

Instructions:
Fill up one pie pan with sand. Place a large rock in another pie pan.

Have your family break out into two teams. One teams will receive the pie pan with sand. The other will receive the pie pan with a rock.

Instruct each team to use play-doh to build a house – on the rock and on the sand.

Tiger - hard at work

Panda - building a house.

T-Rex takes it easy.

Sasquatch - helping...playing?

After everyone builds their houses, go to the sink, and let the “storms rage”.

When we did our object lesson, the house on the sand overturned almost immediately. Full Disclosure: the house on the rock also fell, but only after we really tried to get it to – by coming at it from all angles. When we had FHE, we explained that the house built on the rock fell because we didn’t dig into the rock to form a foundation.

We also discussed how to create a deep foundation – that it isn’t done by casually worshipping the Savior.

After we did the object lesson, we read the following scripture:

“Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock:

And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock.

And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand:

And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it.” – Matthew 7:24-27

Panda asked us several questions about this scripture block. She also directed us to Helaman 5:12

“And now, my sons, remember, remember that it is upon the rock of our Redeemer, who is Christ, the Son of God, that ye must build your foundation; that when the devil shall send forth his mighty winds, yea, his shafts in the whirlwind, yea, when all his hail and his mighty storm shall beat upon you, it shall have no power over you to drag you down to the gulf of misery and endless wo, because of the rock upon which ye are built, which is a sure foundation, a foundation whereon if men build they cannot fall.”

What is wisdom? Building on the sure foundation of the Savior.

Finally, Panda bore her testimony…

“I’d like to ‘bury’ my testimony that if we build our life upon Christ and do the right things to stay with Him, then we’ll always stay happy. If we listen to Him, then we won’t be tricked by Satan.
